- Southtown is a port city fortified with city walls, but the city environs have expanded beyond them.
- The city has a newspaper detailing some recent intrigue.
- Recently the Duchess died in her sleep, and the Duke was stabbed while in the main square.
- The younger son Bram is head of the city guard and is investigating.
- The eldest son Thornton is now the Duke, but is in a power struggle with his sister Elinor who maintains that he is unfit to rule.
