Forest of Andor/Tech Diary
The Books
The first book given by Gracebloom has a silvery cover that is warm to the touch and is not actually metal with a spiralised binding that seems quite novel but ingeniously holds pages together (i.e. A spiral bound notebook). The cover has a note stuck to it with a date and a reminder to cast mending on that day each year and the book itself and the pages inside are so neat that it's unlike any other you have ever seen. (i.e. Plastic coated hard card cover and laser cut pages).
Much like all of the writing in the Oughouh (ship) the alphabet in the spiral bound book is familiar but not the language. There is writing on the pages in various states. Some are full pages, some blank and some clearly partially damaged though all pages themselves are pristine.
This book is accompanied by a tome bound in some sort of treated bark with rough pages that show signs of the leaf veins betraying their origin. The pages are very thick and uneven in shape, making it hard to flip through from page to page. While rougher than the books that you are used to you can see how this may be a more primitive version of those books. The contrast between the two books is quite startling.
With little headway on the original book, you are all reliant on studying the prior translation. This is a rather rambling affair and is written in a rather archaic form of common that does not help with comprehension but with the first few hours of study you are able to glean the following...
- The translation has a date that places it at around 500 years ago
- The translator was Janet the Enlightened erstwhile leader of Oakenspire.
- Janet found the book and halted its decay with the Mending spell.
- Janet made use of a spell called Comprehend Languages, and even with this noted that most of the pages that were not damaged contained idiom that meant little to her - clearly something requiring basic understanding lacking in her society and probably technical understanding in a field unknown.
- The title of the book is "Surviving on Andor: Instructions to all Daves and Johns".
